History of our Flag
There were many flags that have passed over the years, but I'm only going to show you a few of them. All of the flags have a unique look. According to popular legend, seamstress Betsy Ross created the first American flag in 1776 for Washington and the Continental Congress.
This flag was the first unofficial national flag. This flag is called the "Grand Union Flag" or "Continental Colors." It contains 13 alternating red and white stripes for the 13 original colonies, and the British Union flag in the top left corner of the flag. It was hung near Washington's H.Q. on Jan. 1, 1776.
The first official national flag was called "Stars and Stripes" and was approved by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777. It is unknown who made this flag. It contained 13 stars and alternating red and white stripes to represent the 13 original colonies.
In 1818, Congress passed a law keeping 13 stripes and having 1 star for each state. On July 4, 1960, the 50th star was added to the flag for Hawaii. The flag has remained the same ever since.
